OUR STORY
Breaking New Ground in Agricultural Science
Western Crop Innovations (WCI) is at the forefront of agricultural development, emerging from a 50-year legacy as the Lacombe Field Crop Development Centre (FCDC). Incorporated in April, 2024 under the Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act and backed by a partnership with Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, WCI aims to be a pillar of progress in the agricultural sector. Under a new name and operating within a flexible business model, we continue to advance a tradition of groundbreaking research and a deep commitment to the agricultural community. This approach allows us to respond to industry needs, fill critical research gaps, and leverage diverse funding sources to support innovation in agriculture.

Why We Evolved
The transition to WCI was a key milestone for us. It has opened new possibilities to increase our influence and improve how we operate, ensuring our innovative breeding techniques and developments in crop science reach a broader audience. The move has also strengthened our ability to secure essential financial support and build closer relationships with our partners across the industry.
Moving Forward
WCI is dedicated to driving real change in agriculture. Guided by bold thinking and a purpose-driven approach, our work focuses on increasing yield, improving disease resistance, and ensuring superior end-use quality of crops for western Canadian growing conditions. Our commitment to the industry remains strong as we continue to lead interdisciplinary research and earn international recognition for advancing crop innovation across the Prairies.

Looking to the Future
Agriculture is not only about yield but also about sustainability and resilience. Our aim is to equip farmers with the tools they need to adapt to and overcome modern agricultural challenges. By fostering long-term partnerships and leveraging the power of public-private cooperation, we’re setting new standards for what it means to be at the cutting edge of the agricultural sciences.
